Gerry's involvement and dedication to burn care and education began back in 1982 when he and another firefighter (now deceased) identified the outstanding need for an organization to increase the awareness of the public in the area of burns and the need for a specialized area for burn care. This awareness not only included the treatment of burns but also the prevention of such injuries. The Fire Fighters Burn Fund Victoria, BC has been intimately involved with the "burn team" since then. In the beginning, funds raised went towards equipment purchases for the new Burn Unit at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C., Canada. It has evolved since then into not only equipment purchases, but, under Gerry's guidance and vision, an organization that supports patients and their families, provides ongoing education for all members of the burn team and provides ongoing education to our local schools. The organization also reaches out to the community by providing J.F.I. counselling. Gerry was the main "push" behind the purchase of the Burn House, a residence that was completely renovated and furnished for out of town patients' families to stay in, at no cost, to lessen the stress they are under while their family member is in the Unit.

Along the way Gerry has been known to step on a few "toes" to accomplish what he felt was required, but without those toes being tread on, the organization would probably not have advanced to to the high level of involvement and respect it has now achieved. Gerry has always been a strong advocate for not only the Fire Service, with his involvement in the Firefighters' Association but also the burn care community with his long involvement in the ABA as well as the Burn Awareness task force.

Gerry has been married for over 28 years to a wonderful woman names Stephanie, who is a strong supporter of his activities, and together they have raised two children. Their son Tyler is in business for himself and is currently working towards a career in the Fire Service, while their daughter Kimberly is currently in school studying to be a lawyer.
